The use of generative AI and AI-assisted tools in writing and artwork
Authors may only use generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok 3, Llama 4, and Deep Seek) to improve grammar, clarity or readability. These tools must not be used to generate original ideas, recommendations or conclusions. All AI-assisted content should be carefully checked and edited by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the work.
If AI tools are used in the writing process, authors must disclose this in the manuscript. A statement about the AI use will appear in the published work. This transparency helps build trust between authors, editors and readers. The authors should reference any AI-generated content using the APA 7th guidelines.
The African Journal of Governance and Development (AJGD) does not consider AI tools as authors, as they cannot take legal responsibility for the work.
Authorship requires human judgment, accountability and ethical responsibility qualities that AI does not possess. Hence, AI tools must not be listed as authors or cited as co-authors on any Manuscript.
Using AI in Images and Figures
AI tools should not be used to create or alter images or figures in submitted manuscripts. This includes modifying, adding, or removing elements from an image. Adjustments like brightness or contrast are acceptable only if they don’t hide or distort the original information.
